I decided that M. Clinic was the place for me and started packing up shortly after visiting the clinic. The people seemed friendly there and Meloney talked to me like I was already working there and living there. She had given me her number to call if I changed my mind about the living conditions and so I called her up to tell her that, yes, I wanted to move in with her. She was happy and so I turned in my resignation at Starbucks and told the landlord that I would be leaving. She wasn’t very happy about it and promptly gave me the form that told me I would have to pay for my rent that wasn’t due yet in full before I left.
I never liked her either, so the next day I went to the bank and got my savings out, paying her in full the money I owed her. She didn’t really like that I gave it to her cash so I told her she was a greasy, sleazy old lady and she could stuff it where the sun didn’t shine. I was moving out anyway so I thought I’d tell her what I thought about her.
Moving my cat was going to be the hardest part because Mixey doesn’t like to travel. Luckily it was only three towns away, not three cities or three states. So I put everything in the U-haul and headed toward Broswell, excited and scared at the same time.
I met Meloney at a cafe on the outskirts of Broswell and she met me with a big hug and a kiss on the cheek. I was a little taken aback by her friendliness but I guess it was better than what I could have had.
“How was your drive?” she asked as we sat down.
“It was fine. Um, I don’t mean to rush, but is there a way we can go to your house soon? I have Mixey in the car with me.”
“Mixey?”
“My cat.”
“Oh… I’m sorry, Jenna, I should have told you that I don’t do well with cats. I’m allergic actually.”
“Oh! Oh…” Damn it. Mixey was my best friend, the one thing that I owned solely besides my clothes and car. “I didn’t know that. Um…”
“But I know someone who would love to take him in and would be very good to him. He works at the clinic with us, the x-ray tech. He loves cats and he’d give you an update on him as well as let you see him as much as you like.”
“Oh… okay, that’s great!”
“I’m really sorry I didn’t mention that. I honestly didn’t take you as a cat person. More like a gerbil.”
“No, I don’t do rodents.”
“Dogs?”
“I like dogs but because I was gone all the time, I didn’t have time to take care of one properly.”
“Ah, I see. Well, that’s understandable. Cats are solitary creatures and are easy to care for.”
“True, but what I didn’t realize that even though they are solitary, they like to have their owners around more often than people think.”
“Interesting…” Meloney said, putting her hand under her chin. “Well, let’s have a quick coffee and snack and then I’ll take you by Tamark’s place.”
“Tamark?”
“Mmm-hmm, Tamark La’Johnson. He’s the x ray tech I was telling you about.”
“Oh, okay.”
“Oh and if he acts a little prude at one time and then very sensual and jokey the next, just… ignore him. He has issues…”
“Um… okay…”
Meloney smiled and I realized how gorgeous she really was. She had amazing blonde hair that wavy and went all the way down to the small of her back. At the moment she had it in a ponytail but it seemed so luscious and vibrant. Her eyes were the clearest blue I had ever seen on someone. Like crystals almost… I frowned at how I looked and wondered if I really had made the right decision.
“Is there something wrong with your coffee?”
“No, it’s fine. Oh, uh, who was that guy at the gate the other day? Like a guard or something?”
“Oh, that’s Artero. He’s the gatekeeper on staff. We have such a variety of cases that we deal with that he is always there at the right time. He’s not a bad guy.”
“He’s a little creepy.”
“Nah, he just likes to act that way.”
We finished our coffees and a snack and Meloney got in her car as I got into mine. I followed her to take Mixey to his new home. I looked at him as he sat obediently in the cage and sighed. He was given to me by Casey when I got my own apartment. Casey was incredibly noble and wanted to wait until we were married before he moved in with me so he said that Mixey would keep me company until then. If nothing else, Mixey has been a great companion to me for the past four years.
We turned onto a dirty road and began to bounce at the pot holes that were in the driveway. We finally pulled up to a two story house painted green and got out. Meloney was right, for about three cats met us on the way up the steps and purred and rubbed our legs as Meloney pounded on the door.
“Prosnut'sya otkryt' dver’!” she yelled as she banged on it some more.
We waited for a moment when the door opened and an older man about mid forties opened the door and rubbed the back of his neck, looking like he was half asleep.
“Aye, yai… tak neuvazhitel'no utrom.”
“Tak. Tamark, I’d like for you to meet Jenna Busch. She’ll be starting on Monday at the clinic.”
The black haired man looked at me and smiled, standing up straighter.
“Hello.”
“Hi.”
“You’re a sweet morsel to behold so early in the morning.”
“Tamark, it’s one in the afternoon. Pay attention to the sun, dear.”
He looked up and squinted his eyes. “Ah. So it is… What brings you to my home?”
“I wasn’t aware that Jenna had a cat and she brought him all the way from Kellen’s Crossing to not have a home. I know you love cats…”
“Do you not see the amount of cats I have already?”
“True but this one is an emergen…c…cyACHOOOO!”
She sneezed loudly and rubbed her nose.
“Oh, I forgot you were allergic to cats.” Tamark looked at me. “What’s the cat’s name?”
“Mixey.”
“Mixey? Why?”
“My boyfriend got it for me when I moved into my apartment. He said that it was an oddity because it was actually a chimera cat, he has the DNA of two cats.”
“Really? Interesting… May I see him?”
“Yeah, sure.”
I led him out to the car as Meloney stopped by hers.
“I’m just gonna, ya know, stay in here to get away from the cats.”
Tamark waved her off and followed me to the car. I opened the front seat and Mixey looked up at us, giving a meow.
“Daw! Look at him! He’s so cute!” Tamark said behind me, suddenly turning mushy. “Let me see him.”
I opened the cage and coaxed him to come out and then picked him up.
Tamark immediately took him and held him up in the air. Usually Mixey would scramble but he seemed comfortable with Tamark and he smiled.
“Da! A perfect companion to those who have lost someone!”
“What do you mean?”
“Mixey has duty written all over him. He is there to keep you company. Cats do not do things without purpose, my dear. Yes, I will take him in. He still has a sense of duty to uphold.” He put Mixey in his arms and put him as Mixey purred. “You are a good guard kitty, yes you are…”
“I still get to see him, right?”
“Of course! Any time.”
“Thanks.” I walked over to Meloney’s car and tapped on her window. “Okay, I’m ready to go.”
“Great! Thanks, Tamark!”
“Da!”
We left Tamark’s place and drove a bit toward a path that lead deep into the woods. I was a little leery about the location until it showed to be a house that was right on this beautiful lake. I parked next to Meloney’s car and was awed by the splendor of it all.
“This is beautiful.”
“Thank you. I built it with some help. Come on in, the room is ready for you. I hope it’s to your liking.”
I followed her in and came upon a living room that was decorated in sea theme and had a huge glass window behind it, a flat screen in front of the window.
“Wow, this is beautiful. Why do you have the TV in front of the window?”
“Oh, it’s just a wall. I draw the curtains at night to keep the chill out. It just makes it pretty and I didn’t want a glass sliding door there. The door to the deck is actually right over there. It’s a split plan house, so I have my side and you have yours. This on the left is my side, and this on the right is yours. Come on.”
She led me to the other side of the room and stopped at the hall.
“This is your linen closet here and you have a bathroom to yourself right next to it and this is your room.”
She opened the door and I was flabbergasted at the room that was shown to me. It was like two my apartments put together! And I instantly saw the walk in closet.
“Walk in closet.”
Meloney laughed. “Yes, I figured if I ever got a roommate, it would definitely be a girl and so I made sure to get a walk in closet. Do you like it?”
“Like it? I love it! Um, where’s the kitchen though?”
“It’s downstairs.”
“There’s a downstairs?”
“Yup.” We left my hallway and went to the living room. There was a door that was to the left of the front door and it opened up to stairs. We traveled down the stairs and I was met with almost a whole floor of kitchen. I noticed a small wall to separate the kitchen and saw an air mattress and some random men’s clothing on the floor.
“Guest bedroom?” I asked.
Meloney looked at it and smirked. “It’s only for a friend. He doesn’t come over often.”
“Oh, is he?”
Meloney blushed. “Yes. Believe me, he doesn’t come around that often. But anyway, here’s the place.”
“This is an amazing house, Meloney.”
“Why thank you… Here, I’ll help you get your stuff in and we’ll get most of this knocked out in a jiffy.”
We went upstairs and began to unpack some of my stuff.
I never liked her either, so the next day I went to the bank and got my savings out, paying her in full the money I owed her. Pregnant: Unwanted 20
Chapter 20:
That night was hell as guessed. All three babies woke at the same time at 1:13 in the morning. I went to feeding as Matt did diapers. It was a miracle we survived. By 7 AM I was a zombie. Luckily I had maternity leave. And Matt got some time off to help me out. But fuck is this hard. I swear I might die.
Now I sit on the couch as the triplets sleep in their basinets. I laid across the couch and sighed. Matt had gone on a store run for some things we needed. I put on an old Bugs Bunny Rerun and just sat there watching it.
I jumped when my doorbell rang. Bugs bunny wasn’t playing anymore on the TV. Now it was Rugrats. I gro
